Tyrrell Street Bridge

The Tyrrell Street Bridge Replacement project located in Wallsend Newcastle, NSW was the first step in alleviating the suburb’s significant flood mitigation problems.

Description

The Tyrrell Street Bridge Replacement project located in Wallsend Newcastle, NSW was the first step in alleviating the suburb’s significant flood mitigation problems.  The works completed resulted in an increase of the hydraulic performance of Tyrrell St Bridge, improved flood management, reduced road closures and improved road safety and driving conditions.

Construction included demolition of the existing bridge and construction of a two-span, two‑lane prestressed concrete plank road and pedestrian bridge, including adjacent road works, ancillary stormwater and utility adjustments.

To ensure the project was a success, CMC required extensive planning and ongoing liaison with stakeholders and residents within the area. The presence of multiple low-hanging high and low voltage overhead powerlines over the existing bridge presented a particular challenge to demolition and construction activities. To overcome the high risks associated with the work due to the powerlines, CMC developed suitable construction methodologies utilising appropriate plant, including implementing an alternative piling configuration. In addition, CMC sought and obtained approval for electrical isolation from Ausgrid during installation of the bridge planks eliminating electrocution risk. This involved a 6-week lead-in time frame and meticulous coordination to be ready to lift the bridge girders into place while the lines were removed and then reinstated when the girder lift was complete. Finally, there was a second outage to relocate an existing power pole and underground the lines past the future works in the channel.

Major scope items included:

  • Large diameter sewer relocation
  • Re-grading and lining of a 12m wide concrete stormwater drainage channel
  • Construction of a Rock-lined channel batter and shotcrete transitions
  • High voltage underground and overhead relocations
  • Watermain, gas, Telstra and NBN service relocations
  • Landscaping, property adjustment and streetscape works
  • Construction of a two-span plank bridge with bored piles and blade wall pier.
  • Adjustments to stormwater drainage
  • Complete reconstruction of the roads approaching the bridge
