As part of South Burnett Regional Council’s (SBRC) 2014/15 capital works program, SBRC engaged CMC to design and construct two timber bridges to replace two existing ones: Sunday Creek Bridge at Hivesville, and Stuart River Bridge at Ellesmere. Both bridges comprised three span PSC deck units with bored pile substructures. The project was subject to a tight program and was designed and constructed over six months.

Scope

The scope of works included the design and construction of the two bridges, construction of side tracks and temporary creek crossings for the diversion of vehicles, widening and resurfacing of the approaches, guardrail and bridge rail installation, and gabion basket and rock mattresses.

Highlights & Outcomes

  • Met the client’s constrained program by embedding CMC’s design manager into the design team, and commencing work early on elements that would only change minimally, if at all, once design reached 100 percent.
  • Overcame potential program and cost risks by identifying and engaging a local crane hire firm to store and deliver precast beams (fabricated in Rockampton over 450km away) to site, on time, and as required during erection schedule.
  • Reduced costs through the reuse of pile liners and formwork on both bridges.
  • Procured a new low cost cardboard column form which reduced both labour and procurement costs.
