CMC was contracted by TMR to upgrade an existing 1.1 kilometre of the Tamborine-Oxenford Road between Welches Road and Kriedeman Road in Queensland’s Gold Coast hinterland. The project included road and bridgeworks to improve creek crossings across Tamborine and Wongawallen Creeks to withstand a 100-year flood event, ensuring safer access and mitigating the risk of community isolation from flood.
The scope of works included construction of two 50 metre concrete bridges, earthworks, hard rock piling, drill blast operation, drainage works, guardrail installation, fencing, and surfacing. The upgrade improved sight distances for drivers, enhanced traffic flows, provided safe parking, and reduced instances of wildlife road trauma.
Sustainable Impact: The Department of Resources imposed stringent environment conditions on the project due to the creeks holding numerous endangered fauna, including turtles, platypus, and frogs. CMC developed and implemented detailed environmental management plans for the works, including construction of temporary sedimentation ponds to capture all runoff prior to discharge into the creeks.
Problem-Solving: The existing road had traffic volumes of more than 7,000 annual average daily vehicles, and severe vertical and horizontal grade changes. CMC safely executed works within the highly frequented and constrained mountainous area.
Community Engagement:
Economic: The project was completed two months ahead of schedule and under budget.
