Tamborine-Oxenford Road Upgrade

Located in Wongawallan in the Gold Coast hinterland, work involved upgrading 1.1 kilometres of the Tamborine-Oxenford Road between Welches Road and Kriedeman Road, into a ten metre wide bitumen surfaced formation.

Scope

Scope comprised both road and bridgeworks to increase creek crossings to Q100 flood levels – ensuring safer access across Tamborine and Wongawallen Creeks, and mitigating the risk of community isolation from flood.

The upgrade has improved sight distances for drivers, enhanced traffic flows, provided safe parking, and reduced instances of wildlife road trauma. Construction involved two, two-span 50 metre concrete bridges, earthworks, hard rock piling, drill blast operation, drainage works, guardrail installation, rural fencing, and surfacing.

Highlights & Outcomes

  • Delivered on time and under budget.
  • Safely executed extremely hard rock drilling (>200MPa).
  • More than two tonnes of explosives were used to blast around 4,000 tonnes of rock.
  • Safely executed works within a constrained mountainous, highly culturally and environmentally sensitive area.
  • Executed works under heavy traffic conditions including severe vertical and horizontal grade changes.
