Pacific Motorway Upgrade, Worongary To Mudgeeraba

One of the busiest sections of the Pacific Motorway on the Gold Coast, CMC was engaged (in joint venture with Downer) to widen the north and southbound lanes from four to six between Worongary (Exit 77) and Mudgeeraba (Exit 79) interchanges – a total length of two kilometres; extend and upgrade the Exit 77 and Exit 79 on and off-ramps; widen existing bridges; and widen the southbound motorway between Mudgeeraba (Exit 79) and Robina interchanges (Exit 82) – a total length of three kilometres.

Scope

Works largely involved demolition and replacement of existing bridges over road and water, widening of existing bridges, subsoil drainage, traffic barriers, road furniture, ITS, electrical and lighting.

Outcomes & Highlights

$3.3 million of savings delivered to TMR from alternate pavement designs.
27 opportunities and $8.1 million of savings identified during post-tender collaborative value engineering with TMR.
Reduced and adopted a speed limit of 60km/h providing TMR with savings of $1.4 million and program reduction of three months.
Awarded design and construction of a $20 million, two kilometre extension on a sole invitee basis using savings achieved from original contract.
Executed works safely under high traffic volumes – 90,000 vpd in a highly constrained corridor.
Managed acid sulfate soils in close proximity to existing waterways.
Implemented successful project and relationship management process providing best for project outcomes.
Pitched and drove 15 metre long PSC octagonal piles adjacent to operating motorway traffic.
214,000 man hours LTI free.
2015 State and National Winner, Category 5 – $75m to $150m, CCF Earth Awards.
