The project comprised two sections, both five kilometres in length, and provides approximately 18 kilometres of continuous bitumen road upon completion. Both sites were constructed under full road closures with a detour in place for through traffic. Local access was maintained throughout the project.

Major scope items and construction activities included earthworks, extensive clearing and grubbing, subgrade treatments, unbound pavements (Type 2 and Type 3), sprayed bituminous surfacing, drainage infrastructure, line marking and the installation of signs.

Highlights & Outcomes

  • Completed the works seven weeks ahead of schedule, despite significant delays due to wet weather and Cyclone Marcia (February 2015).
  • Concrete orders are closely quantified and a retarder is added to the mix to slow curing, this is due to  travel time between major suppliers and site locations exceeding allowable concrete placement time.
  • Early planning and detailed crane lift designs successfully ensured double handling was eliminated in the transport and placement of 57 ten tonne culvert units fabricated in Ipswich over 300km away.
  • Proven remote location strategies were in place to overcome lack of communications, zero internet and phone.
  • CMC actively participated and contributed to the Blaze Aid appeal after Cyclone Marcia.
