Engaged by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, CMC is delivering restoration works across 34 landslip sites along Mt Spec Road following severe weather impacts. Located within the environmentally sensitive Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, the project involves a range of geotechnical treatments designed to improve slope stability and restore safe access along this critical transport route.
The scope includes soil nailing, shotcreting, gabion walls, micro-piling, netting and vegetation treatments, with more than 13,500m² of shotcrete and approximately 4,000 soil nails being installed across the project.
A key challenge has been delivering the works within a narrow mountain corridor while maintaining public access during daytime hours. Through staged construction, extensive traffic management and strong collaboration between the design team, TMR and CMC, the project has maintained steady progress while environmental, cultural heritage and design approvals continue to be developed in parallel.
Environmental Management: Delivered within the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, with extensive environmental controls, fauna spotter catchers, site-specific environmental management plans and ongoing monitoring to protect sensitive ecosystems.
Safety: More than 181,394 project hours have been completed, with specialist rope access technicians, exclusion zones and enhanced communication systems supporting safe delivery across steep and challenging terrain.
Community and Collaboration: Local suppliers, subcontractors and accommodation providers have been prioritised throughout delivery, while a strong collaborative relationship between TMR, designers and CMC are enabling efficient project progression and timely decision-making.
