Overview

Engaged by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, CMC delivered safety upgrades at the Barton Road intersection on the Bruce Highway, improving visibility and safety for road users along this key transport corridor.

The scope included bulk earthworks, drainage extensions, foamed bitumen pavements, guardrail installation and replacement, sealing works and asphalt surfacing. Working within a live traffic environment, the project was delivered using extensive traffic management measures to maintain safe and efficient traffic flow throughout construction.

A key challenge was the excavation of significant volumes of hard rock within the northern cuttings. Through collaborative planning with TMR and the introduction of an additional traffic switch, works were re-sequenced to minimise delays and maintain program performance.

Highlights

Project Delivery: Completed ahead of the approved Practical Completion date despite significant rock excavation challenges.

Traffic Management: Innovative staging enabled larger work areas while maintaining minimal delays for road users, with travel times remaining well below specification requirements.

Community and Training: Indigenous spend targets were exceeded by 66%, regional participation reached 29% of project spend, and workforce training targets were successfully achieved.
