This project forms part of the Department of Transport and Main Roads High Risk Roads Program, which will deliver safety enhancements along sections of the Cunningham Highway – a key freight and commuter route linking Goondiwindi to the Southern Downs.
The works included intersection upgrades to improve traffic flow and visibility, pavement widening and resurfacing for safer overtaking and durability, installation of new guardrails with motorcycle protection, drainage improvements, upgraded road furniture, and solar-powered flag lighting to enhance night-time safety.
Despite a challenging wet winter and the complexities of working within a live traffic environment, our team delivered the project one month ahead of schedule through strong collaboration and detailed planning. A key hurdle was managing high-risk sealing during Warwick’s winter conditions, which we overcame by working closely with TMR to redesign the seal specification ensuring durability, performance, and program continuity.
Community Impact: The Cunningham Highway team donated their office furniture to the local Wheatvale State School that has just 45 pupils. Wheatvale were very gracious and plan to allocate the savings on office furniture to a new library computer for the students.
Training: This project had a keen focus on training and upskilling their workforce. The project exceeded the targeted training hours by 172% and mentored their staff leading to a promotion for the site engineer to project engineer.
