Overview

Following catastrophic flooding in the region in 2011, CMC was contracted by TMR to complete pavement reconstruction and floodway rehabilitation works on Hervey Range Road between Townsville and Battery. The contract was split into two portions to better facilitate the redesign of Section C of the project. The project comprised SP1 (Sections A & B) and SP2 (Section C).

SP1 involved flood recovery and rehabilitation on the road and surrounding vegetation and floodways, including works such as pavement reconstruction, raising and altering pavements and shoulders to allow for better drainage and address aquaplaning issues, landscaping works and in-situ stabilisation. SP2 involved redesigning and recovery works on 14kms of the road, including addressing pavement failures, spray sealing, and minor drainage structure clean outs.

Highlights

Collaboration: Effective collaboration between CMC, TMR and the community meant that SP1 and SP2 were both completed ahead of schedule.

Problem-Solving: Impact mitigation strategies had to be implemented before commencing the project, as the road was previously subject to effects of an unprecedented weather event. These were implemented and updated during the project, as the area was further damaged by tropical cyclone Ita and the north Queensland wet season.

Community Engagement: During traffic management and construction planning, CMC considered the needs and impacts of vehicles travelling to the nearby Australian Defence Force (ADF) base. A significant number of ADF-registered vehicles, including tanks, travel daily across the road.

Safety: Safety of motorists was a major consideration during this project, as the road remained in use daily. Damage to the road also meant that conditions were unstable and available width for both vehicles and construction was limited.
