Following the extensive damage caused by tropical cyclone Oswald in January 2013, the South Burnett Sealed Roads project was initiated to undertake crucial repairs across the region’s road network. The project faced the dual challenges of a varied and increasing work scope and the need for high mobility and flexibility in workforce deployment.
The scope of work included road drainage reconstruction, floodway reconstruction, sealing, and road pavement reconstruction including both sealed and unsealed (stabilisation, regrade, re-sheeting, CTB dig out and replace) and revised scope additions of work along nine floodways and a major slip repair.
Innovation: CMC proposed alternative cement-treated base (CTB) and stabilisation methods which better met technical specifications and reduced the risks associated with unsuitable materials.
Safety: Safety expectations were exceeded by completing 60,900 man-hours without a lost time injury (LTI). CMC’s emphasis on safety was recognised by the client, leading to an invitation to present their safety management strategies to senior council staff.
Community Engagement: CMC’s proactive engagement with the client through a dedicated field representative facilitated swift identification and resolution of undefined project scope changes and accelerated approval processes, ensuring timely project advancement.
Economic: Through a tailored program that allowed for resource sharing and crew re-engagement from previous contracts, CMC enhanced both productivity and performance, achieved cost reductions and improved quality and safety standards.
