Overview

The Naughtons Gap Road, a vital transport route between Lismore and Casino, experienced a significant landslide in 2021, resulting in its immediate closure and severe community impact. CMC has been engaged by Richmond Valley Council for the D&C remediation of this critical infrastructure. The project involves the implementation of a soldier pile wall, ground anchors, extensive earthworks, drainage, and pavement reconstruction, with a focus on ensuring stability amidst ongoing landslip movements.

Highlights

Complex Geotechnical Solutions: The reconstruction design, developed in collaboration with BG&E and FSG, addresses the continually moving landslip, characterised by upslope batter, downslope failure and underground water flow affecting stability. Key solutions to address the complex geotechnical conditions include a soldier pile wall, ground anchors and extensive earthworks. Early installation of geotechnical monitoring equipment has been crucial, allowing for site monitoring and ensuring safe construction practices.

Sustainable Impact: An Environmental Management Plan was developed, focusing on erosion and sediment control due to the steep terrain and limited road reserve. CMC implemented a Review of Environmental Factors (REF), ensuring minimal disruption to local flora and fauna and maintaining a positive relationship with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).

Community Engagement: CMC has prioritised maintaining open communication with the local community, minimising disruption by working closely with residents. CMC’s efforts included using local resources and subcontractors, fostering community support and involvement.
