New and Improved Bridge Connecting Generations

In a blend of innovation, progress, and nostalgia, 97-year-old Jim Grant was one of the first to cross the new Six Mile Creek Bridge, constructed by CMC in collaboration with the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Jim’s connection to the bridge stretches back nearly nine decades when as a young boy of eight, he was among the first to cross the original timber bridge in 1934.

Jim recalls the journey across the bridge with his father, a time when the bridge served as a critical lifeline for the local farming community. The bridge enabled farmers to transport their produce to market, although challenges persisted, especially during flooding, which often left them with no means to deliver their cream and other goods.

The new bridge improves flood immunity and safety for motorists, featuring a wider deck, shoulders, and two traffic lanes. CMC began construction and associated works on the bridge in late October 2022, and will be delivered ahead of schedule thanks to the dedicated efforts of the CMC team and collaborators. This project not only reflects the advancement in civil engineering and infrastructure development but also highlights the importance of connecting communities and facilitating economic growth.
