Building A Safety Culture

How do you build a safety culture that goes beyond compliance? At CMC, we believe it starts with leadership and collaboration on every site.

At CMC, safety is at the core of everything we do. As part of our ongoing dedication, we established the Zero Harm Advisory Panel (ZHAP) in May, focused on continually raising the bar. A key initiative from ZHAP is the Safety Guide program, where each day, our project teams select a Safety Guide who leads safety briefings, encourages proactive safety behaviours, and drives continuous improvement.

A shining example of the Safety Guide program in action took place on our Mt Warning Flood Remediation project, where Carlos from NVIROSCOPE was chosen by the crew as the Safety Guide for the day. Together with CMC Superintendent Jeremy Wilson, Carlos led a dynamic and collaborative safety discussion. The entire team was engaged, and an outstanding JSEA was developed for the day’s work.

We also recognised several safety champions across our projects through our monthly safety BBQs. On our Tweed projects, Connor Zilles, a newcomer to the construction industry, has already stood out with his commitment to safety, upholding CMC’s values from day one. Kristy Lawton from Maranoa Plant Hire received the award on our Gore Highway project for consistently going above and beyond, helping others with JSEAs and SLAMs, and ensuring the safety of everyone on site. Thank you, Connor, Kristy, and all our safety champions for setting the standard and driving our safety culture forward.
