Project Award: Reconstruction of Mount Spec Road

We’re excited to announce that CMC has been awarded the contract for the reconstruction of Mount Spec Road by the Queensland Government.

Mount Spec Road, located in a remote and environmentally sensitive part of North Queensland, traverses steep terrain with narrow carriageways and dry and wet tropic landscapes. Our team is ready to tackle the unique geotechnical challenges of this vital route.

In early 2025, extreme flooding caused multiple landslips along this important regional road, completely cutting off access to the Paluma community. At that time, emergency recovery operations were undertaken by TMR crews to enable Mount Spec Road to be reopened under controlled conditions.

With the next wet season approaching, CMC’s focus will begin on delivering an extensive package of permanent slope repairs and road reconstruction. CMC will prioritise works based on design development, material, and resource scheduling.

This is a technically demanding project, involving:

  • temporary and permanent works on high-risk slope failures.
  • complex traffic management through narrow, winding roads with steep upslopes and downslopes.
  • working within a Wet Tropic World Heritage Area.
  • targeted and safe reconstruction works.

We look forward to delivering exceptional outcomes for the community and restoring safe, reliable access through this important corridor.

Stay tuned for updates as we get underway!

The recovery works are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
