Overview

CMC has been engaged by TMR to undertake the realignment of a 2.1km section of the Gore Highway to facilitate the offline construction. A 2016 flood study of the Gore Highway between Westbrook and the Leichardt Highway identified the Wyaga Creek crossing at Kilbrone as the largest contributor to the annual flood-related closure of the Gore Highway.

The project works consist of a new bridge that will raise the Wyaga Creek crossing by 1.44m, significantly reducing the annual average closure time of the Gore Highway.

The major deliverables include the construction of a three-span bridge, five major reinforced concrete culvert structures, embankment, unbound and foamed bitumen pavements, sealing, asphalt, landscaping, and delineation works.

Highlights

Collaboration & Design Optimisation: CMC collaborated with TMR to shift the project to insitu foam bitumen pavement and optimised the pavement design to align with locally available materials, providing best for project outcomes. This methodology change has allowed CMC and TMR to mitigate risks related to material delivery within working time constraints, moisture control, and lamination between layers.

Weather: Despite major flood events and nearby fires leading to Gore Highway closures, CMC actively supported the local fire brigade by using on-site water carts to contain fires near the project area. Additionally, CMC provided traffic control and equipment to clear blocked inlets during flood events.

Community: CMC are proud of their engagement with local subcontractors, indigenous suppliers and trainees. The project is on track to double the contractual training hour requirement for the project and is currently 400%+ above the Indigenous employment target hours.
