In January 2011, the Toowoomba region was particularly hard-hit by the Qld flood events and the region’s road, drainage, bridge and water infrastructure sustained severe damage. As part of the National Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), CMC was engaged as part of a panel of three civil contractors to perform extensive restoration works to Council infrastructure caused by the major flood events of December 2010 and January 2011.
CMC partnered with Toowoomba-based contractor, Newland Civil to strengthen the team’s knowledge of local requirements and facilitate a quick delivery of the works. In total, 14 packages of work were award to CMC.
Flood restoration works included:
Collaboration: All project packages were completed on time and any variation and scope changes were successfully negotiated at site level.
Community Engagement: Due to the rapidly changing work sites, two local community officers were engaged to liaise with stakeholders, making affected residents, stakeholders, and business aware of upcoming works in a timely manner and ensuring that any disruptions are communicated and minimised where possible.
Economic: A diverse program of works to 444 individual sites across a broad geographic region on time and under budget. The project team drove cost down through ongoing gains in production and logistics efficiencies, with savings being passed onto TRC. Approximately 84 percent of project expenditure remained within the Toowoomba region.
Safety: More than 180,000-man hours went into this project with no lost-time injury (LTI).
