Labrador-Carrara Road (Currumburra Road) is a major north-south arterial route on the Gold Coast linking Hope Island, Paradise Point, Labrador, Parkwood, Ashmore and Carrara.

Carrying in excess of 27,000 vehicles daily, the road surface had significantly deteriorated between Southport-Nerang Road and Cotlew Street. CMC was awarded a maintenance and pavement reconstruction contract to increase safety and improve driving conditions along this stretch of the Labrador-Carrara Road.

CMC’s scope of work included:

  • Resurfacing between Southport–Nerang Road and Cotlew Street, including the Cotlew Street roundabout
  • Modifications to centre medians for the removal of existing turn lanes and the installation of new turf and stencilled concrete
  • Removal of several obstructing trees along the route to reduce potential roadside hazards to motorists
  • Installation of additional streetlights to improve night time visibility
  • Replacement of gully pits to improve road surface drainage
  • Replacement of damaged guardrail

Highlights & Outcomes

  • Works were undertaken whilst maintaining traffic flows of 27,000 vehicles per day.
  • CMC proposed a ‘left in left out’ traffic arrangement at the Corporation Drive intersection that reduced disruption, increased safety, and enabled the team to complete pavement reconstruction two weeks early.
  • Sustained direct engagement and communication with 50 residential owners/families, a busy medical centre, over 60 commercial businesses, and Ashmore Primary School.
  • One of only two projects on the Gold Coast to receive zero improvement notices during Heads Of Workplace Safety Authorities’ audit.
  • Labrador-Carrara RoadDelivered with zero LTIs.
